British journalist arrested in Singapore


SINGAPORE - Singapore's High Court to decide a man's 76-year-old British national was detained for six weeks. The man accused of distributing a book that is considered insulting the state.

Alan Shadrake, a freelance journalist who released the book "Once A Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock". The book tells the story of the death penalty in Singapore. Its contents include the results of interviews with human rights activists, lawyers and former police officers, including former Chief Constable Darshan Singh who has executed approximately 1,000 people in 1959 until he retired in 2006.

"I accept this decision and I'm sorry that so greatly to Singapore, I will not give pardon to me," said Alan. As reported by AFP on Friday (27/05/2011).

Shadrake will begin his jail sentence after she did health checks. Previously, local doctors discovered a tumor on his face. Shandrake was eventually hospitalized.

Shandrake also will add a two-week detention period because unable to pay SGD 20ribu. However, Singapore courts sometimes have to reduce the sentence if convicted of good behavior.
