Strange Fish Have Sex in the Head Equipment

Phallostethus cuulong is one weird fish found in Southeast Asia. Males only 2 cm long fish has genitals on their heads.

Phallostethus cuulong is one type of fish priapium, named after the ancient Greek god of fertility, Priapius. These fish entered in the family Phallostethidae.

The species was discovered in 2009 by Koichi Shibukawa Nagao Natural Environment Foundation of Japan in the Mekong River, Vietnam.

Male genitalia Phallostethus cuulong not a penis, but priapium. This tool is actually a tubular muscle is a modification of the chest and pelvic fins.

Lynne Parenti of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington said, is not known why these fish have evolved genitalia in the head.
